The post of Attorney General of the state of Arkansas of America is among one of the seven constitutional officers of the state. The person holding this post serves as the state’s top law enforcement officer and consumer advocate for the state. earlier the post of Attorney General in the state was not a post of constitutional officer. It was later created by Act No. 1 of 1848, Mr. Robert W. Johnson served as the first Attorney General of the state of Arkansas in 1868.
Role, Responsibilities & Duties of Attorney General of the State of Arkansas
The constitutional provision made this post an elected post and it was decided that the Attorney General would fulfill the responsibilities conferred by law. This was confirmed by the law of 1874. Four major functions of the post of Attorney General were decided in 1911. Representation on behalf of the state government in all the legal matters of the state and lawsuits affecting the interests of the state, in addition to this, the task of advising the state government on matters related to the law was also performed by the Attorney General. it is the responsibility of the Attorney General to represent on behalf of the State in various criminal courts of the state and on the task of representing the citizens in the matters of habeas corpus and in matters relating to environmental matters and consumer protection. Complaints related to consumer affairs are heard by the Attorney General’s office and appropriate legal action is taken to protect the interests of consumers. In addition, it is also the duty of the attorney general to initiate proper legal action in matters of internal security and also in cases of drug misuse and drug abuse. Private practice of law is not allowed by state law for the attorney general. Private legal advice is not provided to citizens by the Attorney General.
